AL-Lt. Gov: Sparks Will Run

It seems that SSP hero and Alabama Commissioner of Agriculture & Industries Ron Sparks has made up his mind on his 2010 plans — and it’ll be a run for Lt. Governor. From Doc’s Political Parlor:

Those close to state Agricultural Commissioner Ron Sparks hear that he is planning to announce next week his intention to run for Lt. Governor in 2010. One version of the story is that Sparks and current Lt. Governor Jim Folsom have discussed their plans for 2010 so as not to be competing in the same Democratic primaries.

So where does this leave Jim Folsom, the current Lt. Governor? Either retiring or making a run for the top job against Artur Davis in the Democratic primary.

  1. correct I hope Folsom is our gubernatorial candidate. Race not considered, he is the stronger candidate. He’s much better known for one, and has won tough elections before. In fact he was governor for a while until he narrowly lost in 1994, and he’s got a famous last name as the son of a former governor. He has an old fashioned, ancient bluedog appeal about him that will evoke support among people who rarely if ever vote Democrat. Davis on the otherhand represents an overwhelmingly urban, black and Democratic district. He’s unknown by most of the state and has little base outside of Birmingham. As far as politics go they’re both conservative and no liberal is going to win in Alabama anyway. All things being considered Democrats should logically be supporting Folsom.

  2. He would have no chance at getting above 33% against both Folsom and Davis.  Better to go for the open Lt. Gov. spot and bide his time.

A question for everyone: are you more in favor of governors and Lt. governors running on a ticket?  That is, the governor picks a running mate like the presidential candidates do.  Or for this completely separate office style?  A lot of states do it this way and have governors and lt. governors that barely even work together (often being of different parties).  It sort of used to be like that at the presidential level to.

  3. has been his biggest downfall. i think that deciding to run for a lesser seat after considering Senate and Gov was smart.

Davis is the favorite to win the Dem Primary
